YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT?


    

This statement is often thrown around and not really contemplated, many of us joke about it and say things like; “If I eat bananas,am I bananas.Or If I eat nuts am I nuts(crazy)?”, it may be easy for the nutrition fanatic or educated practitioner to critique this statement or an individual who does not apply this concept to daily life, but the truth of the statement is it is not outside the realm of our basic understanding, rather than just stuffing food into our mouths to sustain energy,do we really stop to consider a food items nutritional value? .The reason for discussing this statement is my observation to the lack of commitment to our well-being; many people like myself have been known to comfort eat or skip meals, when we are feeling lethargic or depressed,this is a complicated and problematic factor,which many of us dismiss as ridiculous.

 

Many books have been written on Carbohydrate-addiction and the need to consume excess starchy foods which only gives us short term energy like that of sugar,potatoes,white rice and gluten rich white bread. The body utilises this by converting into fat and storing in the liver which is burned as energy according to calorie expenditure, many of us do not realise that our body image and mood are interlinked according to nutrient uptake. Our blood brain-barrier transmits essential electrolytes (mineral salts which act as neurotransmitters) which govern endocrine(hormone) control. If we are truly able to take control of our well-being,we need to take  this statement seriously and question why we eat a certain way so that we can identify, rather than selfishly inflict our moods on those around us by making excuses.

It is so easy to supplement our diet and neglect essential vital nutrients that come from whole-foods, most of us consider the healthy eating plan bland and uninteresting because of what we initially deem flavorless. Generally food of all description has health giving properties,but it is this lack of knowledge of quantity versus energy requirement that becomes an over-riding factor.

Allergies are now known to be caused by a lack of antigen factors in our blood; which basically means that foods that have not been introduced to us can often have adverse effects on our bodies,families eat certain ways and encourage their offspring to do the same rather that giving them choices; take for example a family who raise their children as strict vegan,they have not the same chance to adapt to calorie requirements for their daily needs as often these  lifestyle choices are imposed by families,which is realistically how experts are proving how a lack of a full range of food groups can genetically show future  offspring allergic reactions.
