Gyptian was born ‘Windel Beneto Edwards’ on october 25th nineteen eighty three, he grew up in the rural district of King Weston, Saint Andrews,Jamaica. He was encouraged by his parents who quickly recognised his vocal talent to pursue a musical career when he was hesitantly introduced to the record producer Mr Wong in Portmore, Saint Catherine’s, Jamaica.He quickly recognised the opportunity before him and began learning the ropes with the support of Mr.Wong and guidance from the legendary roots reggae guitarist Earl ‘Chinna‘ Smith.
Gyptian began his career in two thousand and five with the hugely popular debut single,”Serious Times”, reaching number one in the reggae charts at home and abroad. His debut album “My name is Gyptian” was released in september two thousand and six on VP Records.This album is a selection of conscious roots reggae tunes which truly showcased his developing vocal talent , including the hit song ‘Mama’,’Serious times’ and the lovers rock tune ‘Beautiful Lady’.
Also in september two thousand and six he collaborated with I-Wayne on the fourteen tune compilation album “Toe to Toe” (volume ten) for the Charm Music Label. In october of two thousand and eight,Gyptian released his second album for VP Records with the hit song of the same name “I can feel your pain”. Gyptians vocal musical style quickly developed from the conscious roots reggae mixed with dance hall and is heavily infused with modern rhythm and blues. During march two thousand and ten,Gyptian released his third album “Revelations” with producer Kemar ‘Flava’ McGregor on the No doubt music label.
July two thousand and ten was a busy year for Gyptian’s recording and touring schedule at the same time he released his third album for VP records and hit song of the same name “Hold you”. His most recent album “Choices” was released on Kingston Records in April of this year,he continues to work hard to promote this album and has an extensive touring schedule lined up well into two thousand and twelve.
